Selecting a consumer mailing list for residents of New York can seem like an ample task for even seasoned direct mail marketers.  The Big Apple is a virtual melting pot of cultures, races, religions, ages and lifestyles and making sure that your marketing piece ends up in the hands of your ideal target can be a crapshoot.  Our continuing blog series takes a look at the people and neighborhoods that make up the five boroughs of New York City and gives marketers an in-depth understanding of the complex demographic scenarios that can occur when selecting a consumer mailing list of New Yorkers.

The Bronx is one of the most demographically different boroughs in New York City.  The Bronx contains one of the five poorest Congressional Districts in the U.S and also many affluent neighborhoods.  The most culturally diverse of the 5 boroughs in fact the U.S. Census considers the Bronx to be the most diverse area in the country.  This diversity is seen through the summer activities that Bronx residents participate in.  To tanning on the beaches of exclusive City Island to Free Day at the Bronx Zoo, all residents of the Bronx partake in lots of summer fun!

City Island is the top spot for the affluent of the Bronx.  The Island is actually part of the Bronx, through connected with a bridge to the mainland and features many beaches and gorgeous waterfront homes and mansions.  With Execution Light to the northeast and Stepping Stones Lighthouse to the south, City Island has a rich nautical history.  The island has the look and feel of a small New England fishing village, with no spot more than a few minutes' walking distance to the water.  Residents of the Bronx escape to City Island for the quaintness and the beautiful beach atmosphere.

For those Bronx residents that like to channel their inner athlete, there is nothing like a stop at Yankee Stadium to catch the boys of summer in action.  The new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009,incorporates design elements from the previous Yankee Stadium, thus paying homage to Yankee history.  In 2013, the New York Yankees donated approximately 67,000 tickets to various community-based organizations providing low income Bronx youth with the opportunity to experience professional baseball in person!  Now that is spreading some summer love!

The Rebel Diaz Art Collective is the hippest group of rappers, poets, music producers and political activists on the East Coast and a trip to their location at 478 Austin Place near 149th Street should not be overlooked.  Through performances, educational workshops, and multi-media training, the collective aims to provide a safe space for cultural exchanges.  Every first Friday of the month, the Collective holds an Open Mic/Showcase series called "Boogie Mics” which also cannot be missed!

Another great event held the first Friday of each month is The Bronx Museum of the Arts First Friday.  First Friday features great music and films that reflect the cultural diversity of the Bronx.  The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a great place to visit any day of the summer though!  It is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents contemporary art exhibitions and education programs and is committed to promoting cross-cultural dialogues for diverse audiences.

Although it was the third most densely populated county in the United States as of 2010, about one-fifth of the Bronx's area, and one-quarter of its land area, is given over to park land: about 7,000 acres!  What a great borough to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.  The borough contains many parks with too many special events planned throughout the summer to list!  Also, during Bicycle Sundays, a portion of the Bronx River Parkway is closed to cars for the exclusive use of bicyclists, joggers, walkers, scooters and strollers and for residents of the Bronx to enjoy the fresh air!

Finally, the gem of the Bronx, the ever popular Bronx Zoo a great place for a summer family day or a summer date night!  Since 1889, the Bronx Zoo has been world's largest metropolitan zoo, with some 6,000 animals representing about 650 species from around the world.  The Zoo is also home to one of the most popular and beloved Children’s Zoos in the world, although it is closed this summer while it undergoes a massive renovation and updating.  The best part about the Bronx Zoo?  Wednesday!  General Admission on Wednesday is by pay-what-you-wish donation.  Every dollar you give supports the Bronx Zoo’s work in caring for animals in New York and around the world.

Of course there are many of unique and diverse neighborhoods throughout New York City, but one things remains the same, the island is filled with many vibrant communities made up of many different residents.  Understanding each neighborhood and its variety of residents when choosing a consumer mailing list can be an arduous task.  With so many different demographics, who do you target?  Our BB Direct Data Team understands marketers targeting dilemmas and are experts at locating a consumer mailing list that produces results!
